Cerebral palsy is a condition in the brain that affects a person’s movement and coordination. It happens when a baby’s brain is damaged while inside the womb or doesn’t develop normally.
Some common causes include a head injury, meningitis, an infection, asphyxiation, reduced oxygen supply or blood to the brain, or bleeding in the brain. It may develop before, during, or after birth, but symptoms start showing at 2 to 3 years old. Below are some common symptoms of cerebral palsy:
- Experiencing delays in reaching milestones in motor skills, such as crawling, sitting up, or walking.
- It shows exaggerated reflexes, stiff muscles, and jerky involuntary movements. These are the most common movement disorders.
- Experiencing difficulty with mobility or walking, such as walking on toes, an asymmetrical gait, or a scissors-like gait with crossing knees.
- Showing lack of balance and muscle coordination and favoring only one side of the body, such as reaching for objects using only one hand every single time.
- Speech and eating disorders and difficulties, such as delays in speech development, difficulty speaking, difficulty with chewing, eating, or sucking. It also shows excessive drooling or complications with swallowing.
